CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
May 22,2014
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7:03 p.m. on the 22nd day of May 2014, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main
Street,The Colony,Texas,with the following roll call:
Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present
Marlene Martin Place 2 Present
Frederick Rushing,Chair Place 3 Present
Judith Hebb Place 4 Present
Joanna Krueger,Vice-Chair Place 5 Present
Jade Kelly Place 6 Present
Margaret Heermans Place 7 Present
And with seven board members present a quorum was established and the following items
were addressed:
1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS:
Call to order
Introduction of new member-Margaret Heermans was introduced as the Place 7
member of the Board
Citizen Input-None
2.0 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approving minutes of Library board meeting held April 24,2014
Motion to approve the above consent agenda item with corrections-Gehrke; second by
Martin;motion passed with all ayes.
3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for
2014:
A. Increase interaction with LISD schools in The Colony to inform school
personnel,parents and students of TCPL's resources and services
Member Gehrke reported that she had informed Lakeview Middle School
Librarian Brandi Grant to contact Youth Services Librarian Amanda Hua to come
to the school and give a presentation regarding TCPL's Teen Summer Reading
Club to the students.

B. Continue Board presence at TCPL events and participation in TCPL public
relations activities
No report.
C. Work with new businesses to have TCPL presence at grand openings
No report.
D. Increase library legislative awareness
No report.
E. Library visits to gain insights for future planning for TCPL
No report.
F. Finalize development of a Speakers' Bureau to provide trained speakers to
local venues to provide information about TCPL's resources, services, and
future development
No report.
3.2 Annual review, discussion, and consideration of recommendations regarding the
Library's schedule of fees
Director Sveinsson reviewed the staff recommended changes to the schedule of
Library Fees.
A motion was made by member Gehrke to go forward with these fees as part of the budget
process and seconded by Krueger. The motion passed with all ayes.
3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
FOTCPL PRESENTS!Fairy Tea Party 4/26:
The event was attended by 33 people. Arrayed in fairy attire, they learned etiquette
for taking afternoon tea,enjoyed refreshments,and promenaded through the Library.
Tea participants were enchanted by The Colony Dance Inc., Dance Company performers:
a soloist performed a moving ribbon dance and a duet danced beautifully to the hit
song"Let it Go" from Disney's movie Frozen.
FOTCPL PRESENTS!Annual Meeting and Fun Night 4/26:
The Silent Auction raised$42 and the Catchphrase Tournament raised$30. Teen
Anime Club members Nicholas Depeew and Kora Curtiss sold bottled beverages as
part of the Anime Club's fund-raising efforts.
New FOTCPL logo:
Friends of The Colony Public Library President Wayne Bullard unveiled the results of
the public vote for FOTCPL's new logo at the Annual Meeting. Sponsors for the
contest were The Tribute Lakeside Golf&Resort Community,Hidden Cove Park and
Marina,The Colony Parks &Recreation Department,and Hawaiian Falls Waterpark

"Bag of Books" sale beginning 6/11:
Patrons will be able to purchase a FOTCPL book bag and fill it up with sale items
from the specially marked sale shelves for$4.00.
FOTCPL PRESENTS!Family Night 6/19:
Dr. Flake-N-Stein's Magic Laboratory will be the presentation for FOTCPL's June
Family Night.
3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs:
Read to Rover 5/10:
On Saturday May 10, two Therapy Pal dogs came to the library so that children in
grades 1-5 could read to them. Five children attended the kick-off for this new
monthly program and read several books, making the dogs feel much loved. This
was the first session of a repeating program that will happen at The Colony Public
Library every second Saturday. The dogs were a corgi named Stella and a golden
retriever named Bella.
Super Smash Brothers Tournament 5/10:
This fund-raising event drew 17 people came to participate in and watch the
Tournament hosted by The Colony Public Library's Teen Anime Club and sponsored
by Friends of The Colony Public Library. David Calles was the winner of the
tournament and he received a$5 Subway gift card.
Bridges Cemetery Open House 5/26:
This event will be held on Memorial Day,from 10 a.m. to noon,to honor those buried
in Bridges Cemetery. Members of The Colony Public Library Local History
Committee will be on site to give tours, place flags on soldiers' graves, and answer
questions about The Colony's rich history. Copies of the committee's publication,
Bridges to the Future,will be available to purchase for$10.
"No Stress" Book Club"5/28:
The club meets at 7 p.m. Club coordinator Kim Volenik is seeking ideas for the
development of the club.
Early Dismissal Movie 6/6:
The movie Frozen will be shown at 1:30. All ages are welcome.
Summer Reading Club logging begins 6/7:
Director Sveinsson encouraged the Board members to sign up and log their reading
in the adult summer reading club"Literary Elements".
Summer youth programs:
Director Sveinsson referred the Board members to the June events list for information
about the extensive program offerings for this summer.
3.5 Review list of June library programs
The Board reviewed the list.
