HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/30/2014 KTCB MINUTES CITY OF THE COLONY KEEP THE COLONY BEAUTIFUL BOARD JANUARY 30, 2014 After determining that a quorum was present, the Keep The Colony Beautiful Board of the City of The Colony, Texas convened into a regular session which was held on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, at which time the following items were addressed: Staff Present: Joe Perez Board Members Present: Linda Van Vranken, Peggy Chenault, Joe Zacha, and Jatun Thompson. Absent: Roger Morehouse 1.0 CALL MEETING TO ORDER Chairman Van Vranken called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. 2.0 CITIZEN INPUT Peggy Chenault voiced a complaint about the electronic signs throughout the city. She stated they are unpretty, unbeautiful for our city and can be a hazard. She would like the City Council to change the ordinance. F 3.0 F NUTES 3.1 Approve minutes from the September 26th, 2013 meeting. Motion to approve the minutes was made by Board Member Zacha. Motion was seconded by Vice Chairman Chenault. Motion carried 4-0. F 4.0 WORK SESSION 4.1 Staff to receive and discuss board recommendations for 2014 KTCB events. (Joe Perez) Vice Chairman Chenault suggested doing a beautification project with children along the shoreline trail. Possibly plant bluebonnets along the trail as a way to bring people into the city to take pictures, etc. Chairman Van Vranken thought that was a great idea. Chairman VanVranken suggested having Donna Cole come in to conduct an education class on evasive species of trees. Vice Chairman stated that she liked her presentations as you always learn something from her classes. Board Member Zacha would like to have a stronger social media presence. He would like to have our meetings sent out the day of the meeting or possibly send out invites to our meetings using social media. Board Member Pool thought having the flowers along the shoreline trail would be a good idea. M 1- 0- ~ Board Member Thompson suggested hosting a vendor expo. The community could be invited. Board Member Brewer asked if we approach the church groups or do we wait for them to come to us. Joe Perez stated that we do work with them on individual VAP (volunteer assistance program) projects in addition to our annual Make a Difference Day cleanup/projects. Board Member Brewer asked if we had to wait for the contract with Allied to be up in order to ask for donations. He stated that if we had donations it could help with seed money for different KTCB projects. Joe Perez said he would look into it, but would like to have a plan or list of programs prior to asking for donations. Other suggestions included: • Having banners for KTCB at events. • Property of the month. • Garden Club. • Landscape design offer incentive for homeowners who want to improve their landscaping. • Vendor discounts for vendors to offer 20% off for The Colony residents. • Talk to CDC for beautification projects along the trails, etc. • Talk to Allied about sponsoring a segment of the trails. • Plant bluebonnets along the greenbelt. 5.0 DISCUSSION/CONSIDERATION 5.1 Receive an update from staff regarding the 2013 Volunteer Assistance Projects. (Joe Perez) Item pulled 5.2 Receive an update from staff regarding the 2014 Governor's Community Achievement Award. (Joe Perez) Joe explained to the board what the GCAA is and stated that we applied for this award the last two years and have not won, but we will continue to try every year.
