HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/25/2013 KTCB MINUTES CITY OF THE COLONY KEEP THE COLONY BEAUTIFUL BOARD APRIL 25, 2013 After determining that a quorum was present, the Keep The Colony Beautiful Board of the City of The Colony, Texas convened into a regular session which was held on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, at which time the following items were addressed: Staff Members Present: Joe Perez, Iris Browder and Terry Gilman Board Members Present: Peggy Chenault, Linda Van Vranken, Roger Morehouse, Joe Zacha Board Members Absent: Joel Ortega 1,0 CALL MEETING TO ORDER Meeting was called to order by Chairman Van Vranken at 6:45 pm 2.0 CITIZEN INPUT No citizen input 3.0 MINUTES 3.1 Approve minutes from the January 31, 2013 meeting. Motion was made by Board Member Zacha to approve the minutes as written. Motion was seconded by Board Member Morehouse. (4-0) 4.0 DISCUSSION/CONSIDERATION 4.1 Discuss the use of compostable lawn bags. (Terry Gilman) Mr. Gilman explained to the Board that he was approached by a vendor about using a different type of compostable mesh bag instead of the standard craft bag. He stated that the type of bag is similar to what is currently being used, except they don't disintegrate in the rain and the cost is about the same. Although Allied is okay with new bags and would pick them up, Mr. Gilman stated he is still waiting on the official letter from Living Earth to see if the new bags would be acceptable. In the meantime he asked the board to try them out to see if they are something they would like to use. Mr. Gilman said he would check back with the board at the next meeting to get their feedback. 4.2 Receive a report on the outcome of the 2013 Spring Cleanup. (Terry Gilman) Mr. Gilman provided with the board with the results of the Spring cleanup which was held on Saturday, April 13. Mr. Gilman stated that the spring cleanup is always bigger than the fall and this year was no exception. The same services were offered as in the Fall. The results were as follows: Over five hundred (500) vehicles came through the line, some two (2) or (3) times. Eighty five (85) tons of bulky trash was collected. A record amount of electronics was collected totaling 12,651 pounds in which the city receives five (5) cents a pound for electronics totaling ($635.00). Thirteen (13) tons of green waste, twenty-seven (27) appliances, seventy-two (72) tires and twenty (20) car batteries, and six (6) tons of metal was collected. There was 9,400 pounds of documents that were shredding. This was a record number for the cleanup and Cintas had to bring in another truck due to the amount of documents that were shredded. Board Member Chenault asked Mr. Gilman if he was keeping the same system as before. Mr. Gilman said yes that he was keeping the same system, with some minor tweaking. He stated that he is working on adding some signage at the next cleanup to tell people exactly where to go when bringing items through the line. 4.3 Discuss city email addresses for board members. Mrs. Browder informed the board that they have been assigned city issued email address at the direction of Council. This will allow board members to not have to use their personal email address for city business. Mrs. Browder gave each board member their new email address and log in information and showed them how to log onto the website to check their email. She also stated that all future correspondence will be sent to the city issued email address. 4.4 Provide update regarding the All America City Award. Mr. Perez provided the board with an overview of the All America City Award. Mr. Perez stated that the City of The Colony has been chosen as a finalist and that The Colony was the only city from Texas selected this year. Mr. Perez stated, winning this award will help us to better market the city and it will look good on grant applications. The final presentation for the award will be held on June 16th in Colorado. 4.5 Discuss holding a "Wildscaping" class presented by Donna Cole, on May 30th at 6:30 p.m. (Linda Van Vranken) Chairman Van Vranken informed the board that Donna Cole has offered to put on a presentation for the public regarding "Wildscaping" at no charge. The class would be free and open to the public. The class would be scheduled after the May KTCB regularly scheduled meeting. Chairman Van Vranken asked for thoughts. The Board agreed to host the class. Meeting adjourned 7:30pm Linda Van Vranken, Chairman Iris Browder, Recording Secretary
