MINUTES OF REGULAR SESSION OF LIBRARY BOARD
HELD ON
MAY 23, 2013
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:04
p.m. on the 23=d day of May 2013, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas,
with the following roll call:

And with six board members present a quorum was established and the following items were
addressed:
1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS:
Call to order
Citizen input: None
2.0 CONSENT AGENDA
2.1 Consider approval of the minutes of the April 17, 2013 Regular Session
Motion to table consideration of above consent agenda item until the next regular meeting of
the Board - Gehrke; second by Krueger; motion passed with all ayes.
3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1. Discussion and reports regarding progress towards Library Board goals and projects for
2013
A. Increase interaction with LIED schools in The Colony to inform school personnel, parents
and students of TCPL's resources and services
Member Gehrke requested a supply of Summer Reading Club flyers to take to the
Lakeview Middle School librarian. Administrative Assistant Baellow provided the
requested supply. No further reports.
B. Board presence at TCPL events
Member Kelly attended the Stewart's Creek Elementary School carnival, and Member
Martin helped distribute books at the World Book Night event.

C. Legislative awareness
Member Martin sent letters regarding House Bill 374 to legislators, but received no replies.
Director Sveinsson reported that the bill was stalled in committee and may have a better
chance of progress in the next biennium.
D. Library visits
No report.
E. Speakers' Bureau
Member Kelly will contact committee members to schedule a meeting during the month of
June to discuss topics, format, and delivery ideas for presentation to the Board before the
end of August.
3.2 Receive and discuss update regarding NTLP closure and resulting distribution of
equipment to TCPL
NTLP is closing at the end of the month. The NTLP Executive Director is continuing on a
volunteer basis through the end of August, but there will be no office and no staff presence.
Certain items of equipment were distributed to member libraries through a random drawing.
TCPL received a Canon ImageRunner 550 copier which is now the public access copier and is
similar in features to the recently leased Canon ImageRunner in the Library's administrative
office; a photo scanner for use by Technical Services Librarian Charters in her work with The
Colony Local History Committee; a label maker; a portable hand-held scanner, a laptop storage
and charging cabinet with capacity for 16 laptops, and several ESL books.
3.3 Receive presentation re: new electronic resource Oxford Islamic Studies Online
A free one-year subscription has received through a shared grant led by the Honey Grove
Public Library. Director Sveinsson demonstrated its content which includes commentary by
renowned scholars in areas such as global Islamic history, concepts, people, practices, politics,
and culture; it includes Qur'anic materials, primary sources, images, maps, and timelines.
3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding donation of an OPTELEC 20/20 electronic text
magnification reader
This magnification reader was donated by a patron and will be placed where the old
microform reader/printer has been located to serve as a reading tool for visually challenged
customers.
3.5 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: Annual
Springtime Tea 4-20-13; Annual Meeting & Fun Night 4-27-13; FOTCPL PRESENTS! Just for
Fun Family Night 6-20-13
There were 28 attendees at the Springtime Tea and $140 was raised (gross revenue). The
etiquette speaker Linda Rollins is closing her business and so an alternate presentation will
need to be considered for the future. Director Sveinsson discussed the possibility of FOTCPL
taking over the planning and hosting of this currently staff-run event, utilizing teen and adult
volunteers; she solicited ideas on ways to change the format to include the entire family.
There were 13 attendees at FOTCPL's Annual Meeting & Fun Night including attendees at the
eReader Petting Zoo. Officer elections were held; the First Vice-President Membership position
is vacant.

The annual FOTCPL PRESENTS! Just for Fun Family Night features magician, puppeteer, and
ventriloquist Brett Roberts in "Medieval Magic". This event provides fun for preschoolers,
their older siblings, and parents.
3.6 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: World
Book Night 4-24-13; May presentations at elementary schools regarding TCPL's Summer
Reading Clubs and programs; Summer Reading Club online registration; eReader
demonstrations 5-02-13 and 5-15-13; Kids Colony 2 Phase 2 Grand Opening 5-10-13;
Stewart"s Creek Elementary School carnival 5-10-13; Carney Elementary School Literacy
Night 5-16-13; Pokemon Tournament 5-11-13; The Colony Early Childhood PTA 5-13-13;
Read the Movie Night 6-06-13; Bring Your Own Board Game 6-09-13; Summer Reading
Club book logging (begins 6-10-13); National Audiobook Month June 2013
Director Sveinsson provided the following update, accompanied by photos of some of the
events:
Twenty copies of The Lightening Thief and Bossy Pants were given away. Member Martin, her
daughter Felicia Sparks, and FOTCPL newsletter/Facebook site editor Jennifer Appel manned
the event table.
Youth Services Librarian Poore presented SRC information to a total of 1,114 students at
Stewart's Creek, Ethridge, and Morningside Elementary Schools, presenting twice at each
school: one presentation for K-4th grades and one for 5th graders moving up to the Teen Read
category.
SRC online registration totals to date: 31 Read to Me; 44 grade schoolers; 10 teens; 23 adults.
eReader demonstration attendance: May 2 - one; May 14 - four.
Technical Services Librarian Charters attended and took photographs of the grand opening of
Kids Colony 2 Phase 2 as staff liaison to TCPL's The Colony Local History Committee. There
were over 400 attendees including descendants of the Bridges family.
Director Sveinsson, Circulation Clerk Martin and Member Kelly attended the Stewart's Creek
Elementary School carnival. 178 contacts were made, two library cards were issued, and three
SRC members registered.
Youth Services Librarian Poore and Circulation Clerk Martin made 32 contacts at Carney
Elementary Literacy Night and 10 library cards were issued.
There were 23 attendees at the Pokemon tournament and Anime Club members reached their
fund-raising goal; qualifying members may turn it their 2013 A-Kon convention badges to get
their registration fees reimbursed up to $35.
Youth Services Librarian Poore presented Story Time to 11 children at The Colony Early
Childhood PTA.
The recently-released movie based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein is scheduled for viewing at
the June 6th Read the Movie Night.
National Audiobook Month - Throughout June, customers who check out or download
audiobooks qualify to register in a drawing for an MP3 player.
3.7 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Grant Projects: NTLP eReader Lab Grant;
TSLAC Impact Grant; TSLAC Mobile Presence Grant; CoServ Charitable Foundation Grant
NTLP eReader Lab Grant: There were two demonstrations held in May totaling five attendees.
The next event, a "Petting Zoo" is scheduled for June 15tH.

TSLAC Impact Grant: In May, 374 children and teachers participated in early literacy activities
provided by this grant-funded project. Starting next week, Youth Services Library Assistant
Martinez will begin distributing two Early Literacy Kits to each daycare visited and will
replace them on a monthly rotating basis.
TSLAC Mobile Presence Grant: Four Apple iPads and two Samsung Galaxy Note tablets have
been received through this grant to be used by staff for testing the Library's mobile apps and
site and for training staff and customers to get maximum benefit from implementation of
TCPL's mobile presence.
CoServ Charitable Foundation Grant: Electronic Services Librarian Cox has submitted TCPL's
application for $7,875 to fund the 2013 charges for the Tutor.comTM services provided to its
cardholders, including live homework help for kindergarten through 12th grades, college and
adult learning, and the 24/ 7 SkillsCenterTM online resources.
3.7 Review list of summer reading incentive activities and June library programs
The board members reviewed the list.
And with no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 8:31 p.m.
