HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/18/2012 LIB MINUTES CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD OCTOBER 18, 2012 A REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order by Chair Gehrke at 7:02 p.m. PRESENT: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Marlene Martin Place 2 Frederick Rushing Place 3 Jade Kelly Place 6 ABSENT: Audra Preston Place 7 Nicole Rodriguez-Terrell Place 4 Joanna Krueger Place 5 STAFF: Joan Sveinsson Library Director Jeannie Baellow Recording Secretary 1. Citizen Input. 2. Consider approval of the minutes of the September 27, 2012 Regular Session. Vice-Chair Rushing moved to approve the minutes as presented. Member Martin seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. 3. Reports and discussion regarding Library Board goals and projects for 2012: a. Increase awareness of national library legislative issues. Discussion was held regarding the fact that libraries stimulate interest in reading digitized books but that publishers take actions to limit libraries' access to digitized materials. Director Sveinsson noted that the industry is in a transitional period and lawsuits regarding First Right of Sale of Materials have been filed and decisions are pending. It was further noted that an Amazon distribution center is returning to Texas which will generate sales tax revenue for the State. b. Board presence at TCPL events and TCPL public relations activities: reports and discussion of participation by individual board members. The Board's stated goal was for each member to attend three to five events throughout the year. Chair Gehrke attended the February 30th Anniversary Celebration, the July Read to Me and SRC Finales, and assisted at the August Back to School Bash and the September Lakeview Middle School open house. Member Krueger attended the March Theatre Slam and assisted at the August Back 2 School Bash; Member Kelly attended the September FOTCPL Fall meeting and adopted a chair; Vice-Chair Rushing assisted at the August Back 2 School Bash, TCPL's 30th Anniversary Celebration, and the September FOTCPL Fall Membership Meeting. c. Library visits: No report. The Board's stated goal was for each member to visit at least one library by end-of-year 2012. To date, Member Krueger visited the Denton Public Library - North Branch, Member Rodriguez-Terrell visited the Park Forest Branch of the Dallas Public Library, and Member Martin will report on a recent library visit at the November Board meeting. 4. Receive update and discuss the following Friends of the Library activities: a. Adopt-a-Chair. Library Board 10-18-12 Page 2 Eighteen chairs have been adopted; two remain available for adoption. b. "Big Bag of Books" sale. Customers may fill an FOTCPL book bag with as many sale items from the specially- marked sale table as the bag will hold at a cost of $4.00 per bag. To date, seven bags have been sold 5. Receive update from staff and discuss the following items: a. Public relations events and programs: i. September's Library card sign up month promotion. Two hundred sixty-four cards were issued during the month. The prize drawing was held on October 2nd and the winners were Sophia Nelson, Lauren Venita and Cameron Rogers. None of the winners were on-hand at the time of the drawing but were pleased to be notified and visited the Library to accept their awards. ii. Writers' Workshop 10-27-12. Adult Services Librarian Nancy Boykin is coordinating this event lead by local writer Kennisha Hill to help new writers turn their ideas into books. iii. Teen Halloween Movie Night 10-27-12. The teens selected the movie The Ring. Member Martin volunteered to assist at the event. iv. Library Snapshot Day 10-30-12. Library Administrative Assistant Jeannie Baellow is coordinating this event sponsored by Texas Library Association to be held on October 30t". In-person and on-line customer surveys and photos of a day in the life of the Library will be collected, compiled and submitted to TLA and will be published on TCPL's website. Member Kelly has volunteered to assist at the event from 2 to 4 p.m. and Member Martin volunteered to assist starting at 5 p.m. v. TCPL booth at American Heroes: A Salute to Veterans 11-10-12. TCPL will once again host a booth at this annual event. Member Rushing volunteered to help with set up; Member Martin has volunteered to bring a table and chairs, and Chair Gehrke volunteered to help during the event. b. Staffing Changes. Youth Services Librarian Jean Snyder is retiring at the end of October; her last day in the office will be October 26t". She has been with the Library since January 1998. Director Sveinsson is updating the Librarian job description and the job will be posted by the end of next week. Youth Services Library Assistant Tina Martinez will conduct Toddler Times starting in November. c. TSLAC Impact Grant. Director Sveinsson and grant-funded Youth Services Library Assistant (YSLA) Tina Martinez are conducting meetings with the directors of local daycares served by the Library's Early Literacy Outreach Program. Director Sveinsson reported that the directors are willing to assist in complying with and fulfilling the grant requirements and are pleased about the proposed revamping of the story time kits and the plan to supply kits to them on a monthly rotating basis. Since this grant is not renewable, other future funding must be sought, so the directors are being asked to alert TCPL of any potential funding sources. Director Sveinsson further noted that the idea of YSLA Martinez providing continuing education training on the Every Child Ready to Read program may need to be re-structured due to State requirements for certification of instructors providing training to day care teachers. Either Director Sveinsson or the Library Board 10-18-12 Page 3 new Youth Services Librarian may need to be involved in conducting the training in order to offer continuing education credits. d. Service improvements: i. Fall Reading Club sponsored by In-N-Out Burger. To date, there are 19 registrants for this reading club for ages four to twelve which will award a certificate for an In-N-Out burger with five books read. Each participant may earn up to three certificates. The club ends November 17tH ii. New electronic resources: Director Sveinsson introduced the following new resources: a) America National Biography Online. Biographies of notable people deceased before 1995, although there are few biographies included of those who have died more recently. b) Small Business Reference Center. Collection of ebooks with a wealth of practical and legal information for starting, marketing and running a small business. c) Legal Information Reference Center. Collection of ebooks on a variety of common legal issues; includes sample forms. d) My Government. Provides information on local, state and federal government plus issues bills and legislation. e) Dear Reader Book News: launch 11-15-12 Allows cardholders to subscribe to up to five e-newsletters highlighting titles from TCPL's collection: New Nonfiction; New Fiction, Young Adult Books, Juvenile Books, and Children's Picture Books; each title description includes a link to the title in TCPL's catalog, where the cardholder may reserve the title. 6. Review list of November library programs. The Board members reviewed the list. The next Board meeting is scheduled for November 29, 2012.
