MINUTES
CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD
JULY 26, 2012
A REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD of the City of The Colony, Texas, was
called to order by Chair Gehrke at 7:05 p.m.

1. Citizen Input.
None:
2. Consider approval of the minutes of the June 28, 2012 Regular Session.
Member Rushing moved to approve the minutes as revised. Member Krueger seconded
the motion and the motion passed unanimously.
3. Reports and discussion regarding Library Board goals and projects for 2012:
a. Display and Exhibit Policy: committee report and discussion.
The Board reviewed revisions made to the policy pursuant to discussion at the June
Board meeting. Following discussion, Vice-Chair Rushing moved that staff proceed
with requesting review of the policy and forms by the city attorney. Member Martin
seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously.
b. Quarterly review of results of customer satisfaction surveys.
Tabled to the August meeting.
c. Board presence at TCPL events and TCPL public relations activities: reports
and discussion of participation by individual board members.
No report.
d. Library visits: reports and discussion of visits by individual board members.
No report.
4. Receive update and discuss the following Friends of the Library activities:
a. Adopt-a-Chair.
Twelve chairs have been adopted; eight remain available for adoption.
b. Read to Me program finale: FOTCPL Presents! Sandy Shrout and her puppets.
This Friends of the Library-sponsored program will be held Wednesday July 27t .
c. Slinky Puppet fund-raiser.
Staff and volunteers created slinky puppets for prizes for the summer reading
programs; additional puppets were created to sell for $5 each as a fund-raiser to
benefit the Library's youth programs. There are a variety of designs available for sale
and they have been very popular with customers.
d. FOTCPL PRESENTS! Meet the Authors & Illustrators, September 15.
Adult & Outreach Services Librarian Nancy Boykin is coordinating this event which
will feature local authors and illustrators who will be on-site to meet the public and to

sign and sell their books. The multipurpose room will be staged as a "green room"
with snacks and water provided by FOTCPL.
e. Fall membership meeting, September 15.
The meeting will follow the Meet the Authors and Illustrators at 4:30 p.m. at the
Library; plans are underway to have an author speak at the meeting.
5. Receive update from staff and discuss the following items:
a. Public relations events and programs:
i. Lost in the Lake - paperback giveaway.
This annual promotion helps clear some of the overstock of sale books, while
providing some fun reading for our public to take with them without the need to
return them - a plus for those who wish to take books on trips or to the lake
without worrying about potential loss or water damage. Staff places the give-
away books in a picnic basket under the bulletin board for customers to select.
ii. The Colony Back 2 School Bash.
School supplies and information will be distributed to students at this August 21St
event from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Recreation Center. In the past, two hundred
registered children, plus parents and siblings, have been allowed entry each hour.
There is no fee for The Colony residents and a $3 fee for nonresidents. TCPL staff
will provide information, distribute electronic resources brochures and information
about Live Homework Help, and offer library card registration. TAP members will
work in one-hour shifts to distribute the Fall 2012 Teen Spot Activities brochure.
Director Sveinsson asked for volunteers from the Board to assist with this event.
Vice-Chair Rushing volunteered to assist with setting up the booth; Member
Krueger volunteered to assist with packing up the booth at 8 p.m.
iii. Griffin Middle School Back to School Bash.
Griffin's new principal invited TCPL to participate in this event on Thursday,
August 16t", from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Griffin Middle School gymnasium. TCPL staff
and TAP members will provide information, distribute electronic resources
brochures and information about Live Homework Help, offer library card
registration, and distribute the Fall 2012 Teen Spot Activities brochure.
b. FY 2011-12 and FY 2012-13 budget considerations.
Director Sveinsson reported that the total amount of Denton County library funding
will be reduced by 10%. City of Frisco is considering withdrawing from the Denton
County library funding program. The Denton County Library Advisory Board sent a
letter to Frisco respectfully requesting that a decision be communicated to the County
Budget Office by August 1St as that is the deadline for the Budget Office to make the
change to the proposal to redistribute the funding among the remaining participating
libraries in the County's proposed budget.
c. Service improvements:
L TEAL (Technology, Expertise, Access and Learning for All Texans Project)
mobile computer lab classes.
TCPL has been selected to host computer classes provided through the Texas
State Library's Technology Expertise, Access and Learning Project (TEAL); TEAL
provides trainers and computers for this free training for the public. The program
is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - Broadband
Technology Opportunities Program. Registration is required; the classes to be
offered are: Computer Basics: Tuesday, August 28, 1 - 3 p.m.; Online Job
Search: Tuesday, August 28, 4 - 6 p.m.; Introduction to Microsoft Word:

Wednesday, August 29, 10 a.m. - noon; and Introduction to Microsoft Excel:
Wednesday, August 29, 1 - 3 p.m.
ii. Ed2Go online adult education classes
Through Ed2Go, TCPL now offers a wide range of interactive instructor-led
professional development and personal enrichment courses that can be taken
entirely over the Internet and are free to TCPL cardholders. Sessions start
monthly and are in a six-week format.
iii. Freading ebook service.
Next month, TCPL will initiate Freading, a downloadable ebook service similar to
the Freegal music download service that was added last month.
6. Review list of August library programs.
The Board members reviewed the list.
The next Board meeting is scheduled for August 23, 2012.
The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
