Citizen Input. None. 2. Consider approval of the minutes of the April 26, 2012 Regular Session. Vice-Chair Rushing moved to approve the minutes as presented. Member Krueger seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. 3. Reports and discussion regarding Library Board goals and projects for 2012: a. Display and Exhibit Policy: committee report and discussion. In response to an inquiry from Member Rushing, Director Sveinsson addressed the difference between revenue that goes to the City's general fund and fund-raising revenue that is handled via the Friends of the Library. Further discussion of the development of the policy was tabled to the June meeting. b. National library legislative Issues: reports and discussion of findings by individual board members. It was noted that Director Sveinsson had distributed an article link to the Board members via email; this article provided a good overview of the current situation regarding publishers' concerns about copyright issues and the impact of these concerns in restricting the ability of public libraries to provide ebook access to library customers. c. Board presence at TCPL events and TCPL public relations activities: reports and discussion of participation by individual board members. No report. d. Library visits: reports and discussion of visits by individual board members. No report. 4. Receive update and discuss the following Friends of the Library activities: a. Annual membership meeting. Director Sveinsson shared photographs from the April 30th event, which was attended by thirteen members and which included a short business meeting followed by a murder mystery, Pasta, Passion & Pistols. FOTCPL members played roles in the murder mystery. b. Adopt-a-Chair Five of the vintage 1987 chairs have been adopted for reupholstery and 14 remain available for adoption. Adoptions may be made in the Library or electronically; an Library Board 05-24-2012 Page 2 Adopt-a-Chair link has been placed on the TCPL website and the adoption fee may be paid via PayPal. 5. Receive update from staff and discuss the following items: a. Public Relations Events and programs: L Carney Elementary School Carnival. Two TCPL staff worked the TCPL booth, issuing several Library cards and distributing Summer Reading Club information; approximately 31 people visited the booth. ii. Teen Anime Karaoke Night. The May 19th fund-raiser had nine attendees, including three Anime Club members who hosted the event. iii. Nook ereader demonstration. Four customers and five staff members attended the May 16th demonstration; both customers and staff found the information very helpful. Two subsequent demonstrations are scheduled with the next being on Wednesday, June 13, at 2:15 p.m. b. Grants: i. CoServ Charitable Foundation Grant. Foundation representatives will present the $8,400 grant to Electronic Resources Librarian Cary Cox at the City Council meeting on June 5, 2012. ii. Wal-Mart Grant application. The Wal-Mart Community Grant is a local facility level grant, generally between $250 and less than $5,000. Administrative Assistant Jeannie Baellow worked with staff to draft TCPL's grant application requesting $3,500 in funding for new and replacement audiobooks for the juvenile and young adult collections. The draft has been submitted to the Library Director for review. c. Service improvements under consideration by staff: i. Freegal Music Service. This service enables customers to get free music downloads via the Library's subscription; the number of downloads is tightly controlled by TCPL. A cardholder may download three songs per week with the Library's overall limit being 60 per week; a new allocation of downloads will be available each Monday. TCPL's initial subscription is for 1,000 downloads; staff projects an average of 250 cardholder downloads per month. Service goes live on May 29; access will be via a link on TCPL's website. Apps are available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. ii. Online summer reading club. Director Sveinsson demonstrated the Summer Reading Club online software which enables online registration and tracking for the various Summer Reading Club programs; registration is available in both English and Spanish; there is an option for requesting emails for library news and events. Participants may track their summer reading online and submit online book reviews; the reviews are vetted by TCPL prior to being posted for public view. The home page includes an area for staff to post the list of TCPL's summer reading club sponsors. It is anticipated that this software will broaden TCPL's ability to reach youth and adults in the community who might not otherwise be able to participate in the reading incentive clubs. Library Board 05-24-2012 Page 3 iii. Teen Library summer interns. TCPL received the YALSA Dollar General Grant funds of $1,000 to be allocated to hire two part-time/temp Teen Summer Interns for 5.5 hour per week each for nine weeks. There were 22 applicants for the positions; twelve applicants were selected for interviews; the interview process will be completed on May 25. d. Review list of June library programs. The Board members reviewed the list; highlights include: • June is National Audiobook Month - there will be a drawing for a free MP3 player. • Read the Movie: Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants, June 7. • Summer Reading Club Programs, including puppeteer Sandy Shrout, Mad Science, Zooniversity, "Just for fun family night" featuring magician, puppeteer and ventriloquist Brett Roberts, and Fired Up About Reading featuring The Colony Fire Department firefighters as guest readers. • Nook Ereader Demo, June 13, 2:15 p.m. • Teen Advisory Panel: BYOBG (Bring Your Own Board Game), June 10th. • Online Resource of the Month: Mango Languages for adults and Muzzy Languages for children.
