HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/15/1997 MINUTES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION BOARD MEETING JULY 15, 1997 7:30 p.m. DENTON COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER Present: Board Sue Walden, Secretary Ronnie Fischer, Secretary Rick Manser David Kovatch, Council Member Absent Gary McClure, President Mary Watts, Mayor Staff Dennis Watson, Staff Liaison 1. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SALES TAX COMMITTEE MEETING AT DENTON COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER Mr. Kovatch introduced himself as the Chairman of the Sales Tax Committee and informed the committee members why they had been asked to participate in the campaign. Mr. Kovatch then reviewed with the committee what the sales tax entailed and some of the potential uses for the tax. Some of the committee members wanted Mr. Kovatch to differentiate between the sales tax and the bond election. The committee members warned that if the bond election passed and street improvements were included as part of the ballot wording for the sales tax election then they felt the sales tax election did not have a chance of passing. A lengthy discussion followed. The committee members then discussed some of the potential uses of the tax. Some of the suggestions that came out of the discussions included a portion of the tax would go to property tax roll back and a portion would go to economic development-related items. The conunittee decided against using any portion of the tax for infrastructure improvements. They would focus on the 4B economic development portion and the property tax roll back. Mr. Kovatch stated that for the next meeting he would narrow down the potential uses of the tax and the committee could discuss whether or not they agreed with the list. Mr. Kovatch also stated that he would begin to work on some preliminary ballot wording. Respectfully Submitted, Dennis Watson, Staff Liaison
